How much card do you actually need?

For 60 FPS at high settings in current AAA games, an entry-level current-generation card is enough. For 144 FPS in the same games, you need roughly two and a half times the performance, which moves you into the mid-range. For 240 FPS you are realistically talking about competitive titles at reduced settings, where the processor usually becomes the limit before the graphics card does.

That last point is the one most 1080p buyers get wrong. If you are chasing very high frame rates in Counter-Strike 2 or a similar esports title, a faster processor and faster memory will often do more for you than a faster graphics card.

The 8 GB question at 1080p

8 GB of VRAM still works at 1080p in the large majority of games. It is not, however, the safe choice it was two years ago: several recent releases exceed it at Ultra textures, and enabling ray tracing pushes memory use up further.

If you are buying for the next two years, 8 GB is fine. If you expect the card to last four or more, the step up to 12 or 16 GB is usually the better use of the extra money than a slightly faster 8 GB card.

Is a high-end GPU wasted at 1080p?
Largely, yes. At 1080p a flagship card spends much of its time waiting for the processor, so you pay for performance the rest of the system cannot use. The exception is if you intend to move to a 1440p or 4K monitor within the card's lifetime.
What frame rate should I aim for at 1080p?
Match your monitor. A 144 Hz panel is the common case and is a sensible target for single-player games at high settings. Above that, you are usually optimising for competitive titles specifically.
Do I need ray tracing at 1080p?
It is more affordable at 1080p than at higher resolutions, simply because there are fewer pixels to trace. If you play games with a well-implemented ray tracing mode and you want it, a mid-range current-generation card can deliver it at 1080p with upscaling.
